OVERVIEW The AM1042 is a 14HP module that re-imagines the "lost" ARP module of the 2500 modular synthesizer. Prototypes of the original appeared in 1970 but the module never made it into production. The AMSynths module fills in a gap of synthesizer history for Eurorack. The module has three transistor voltage controlled amplifiers each with a single DC coupled input.

DESCRIPTION Each of the three channels is based on the discrete transistor VCA sub module (4014) in the original ARP 2500 and 2600. The DC signal inputs is mixed into each VCA, with two external CV signal inputs and a GAIN potentiometer controlling the output signal level.

The input of the second and third VCA are normalised to the signal input of the first VCA, to enable parallel VCA operation from one signal.

The response mode of each VCA can be set as linear or exponential. We did investigate whether a continuously variable response rate was useful but it made no significant difference apart from creating a -6dB gain loss in mid position.

The gain of the VCA is adjusted with the main rotary potentiometer or by the modulation input (MOD) or by the CV input (CV) with depth potentiometer.

High quality Alpha potentiometers and Rogan 2500 knobs have been used to ensure control voltages can be easily set and adjusted.

CONNECTIONS There are four 3.5 mm jack sockets for each VCA channel :

  • Input - audio signal input (10V p-t-p) which is DC coupled
  • Mod Input - control voltage (0 to +10V) to control the gain of the VCA
  • CV Input - control voltage (0 to +10V) to control the gain of the VCA
  • Output - Audio signal output

The module comes with a set of M3 mounting screws and washers, and a standard Doepfer power cable.

Can never have enough VCA's

Matthew Edgar · May 2024

My Behringer 2500 system certainly needed some more VCA's and these are perfect. The build quality is excellent and they work like a dream. They are at a great price for the workmanship involved and I can't wait to add more modules soon.

More modules on the way!

A real treat!

Charles Nunez · April 2024

Been a huge fan of the Behringer 2500 series and so far been very happy with the new editions Rob has added to flesh out the 2500 series. My system was lacking in mixers and VCAs so this module has been great at filling in those gaps. I like the ability drive the signal as well, it sounds great but doesn’t go as far as say a serge module when trying to route the outputs into the inputs to see how far you can push it. Nonetheless, I’m happy with it and excited for the next upcoming unreleased 2500 modules as well!
